St James Church, Aslackby
Project type
Church
Location
Aslackby
St James Church, Aslackby is a truly remarkable Grade I listed building in the heart of Lincolnshire, and I had the privilege of serving as Architect for its latest repair project.
The works focused on the tower and nave roof, involving the replacement of the leadwork alongside timber and stone repairs- essential repairs to ensure the long-term good condition of this exceptional medieval church.
St James is home to a large, active, and deeply committed congregation, and its central role in village life was recognised when it was awarded Church of the Year 2024- a testament to its vibrant community and stewardship.
The church also holds a fascinating connection to Spence Broughton, reputedly the last highwayman to be hanged in England. Several pieces of historic graffiti within the building are believed to have been drawn by Broughton himself.
Graffiti is in fact one of St James’ most extraordinary features: its walls and roofs carry centuries of inscriptions. During the re-roofing works we uncovered graffiti commemorating Queen Victoria’s Jubilee—a discovery so special that the church wrote to Queen Elizabeth II, receiving a reply shortly before her passing.
